The link target

Backlink counts and AI-cited pages

Semrush records where a URL ranks for a keyword, the traffic that position earns, the backlinks behind it and the faults holding it back. Every number serves a results page, where position eight still earns some clicks.

An AI assistant answers the same buyer question with a paragraph that names a handful of brands. It cites a few pages to support them, usually review sites, best-of lists and forum threads.

Answer engine optimization tracks presence in that paragraph. LinkGecko uses the tracking to pick link targets. It records the sites each answer cites, checks whether they mention you, and drafts an email to the editor of each one that does not.

Semrush now sells AI visibility tracking too, metered by prompts per day inside a large SEO suite.

The product

What the $29 plan includes

Link desk

Three meters per brand: coverage of the cited sites, link work done, and answer share. The next listings, requests and threads to work on sit underneath.

Cited sites

Every page the answers cite in your category, how often, and whether your brand appears there. Each missing site gets an outreach email drafted.

Link Opportunities

Live requests from journalists and podcast hosts looking for an expert source, matched to your brand, each with a reply drafted.

Reddit threads

The Reddit and forum threads the answers quote, ranked by citations, with a reply written for you to edit and post.

Competitor map

Which brand holds which buyer question, and the cited pages that keep each rival in the answer.

MCP access

Query the link desk, cited sites and drafts from your AI assistant app while you work. No export step.

The first month

A first month with LinkGecko

01

Questions in the buyer's words

The agent collects real search phrases, drafts the questions buyers ask AI and sorts them by buying intent.

02

Cited sites ranked

The first report lists every site the answers cite and ranks the ones that leave you out. A listing on one of them can change the answer faster than a new post on your site.

03

Outreach drafted

Each target comes with an email that quotes the buyer question its page decides. You edit and send.

04

Weekly re-runs

The Auto-agent repeats the analysis every week and emails you when a listing starts getting cited or a competitor takes a question.

The stance

Which links LinkGecko suggests, and which it leaves alone

Most targets are pages the answers already cite: review sites, editorial best-of lists, comparisons and forum threads. Journalist requests and podcast seats come from Link Opportunities and may not appear in any answer yet.

Link farms, paid link networks and directories built to sell links stay off the plan, since search engines and AI answers tend to discount them. A profile on a respected review site still makes the list once the answers cite it.

Division of labour

Where each tool wins

Semrush wins backlink research, large technical audits and paid search data. Each depends on an index built over years of crawling, and LinkGecko does not run one.

LinkGecko wins the links that feed AI answers: the sites that decide the answer, the ones that leave you out, and the email to each. A team that needs both can keep a smaller Semrush plan for technical work.

Semrush alternative questions

What is the cheapest Semrush alternative that tracks AI search?

LinkGecko costs $29 a month, with AI answer tracking and link building on its only plan. Semrush includes prompt tracking from its Starter plan, listed at $165.17 a month billed annually when checked in August 2026.

Does Semrush track AI search?

Yes. Semrush sells AI visibility tracking by prompt volume, from 50 prompts a day on Starter to 200 on Advanced. MCP access starts on Starter (checked August 2026). LinkGecko tracks AI answers to choose link targets, and that is its whole product.

What do people on Reddit recommend as a Semrush alternative?

Threads in r/SEO and r/bigseo tend to split by budget and job. Ahrefs comes up for backlinks, while Mangools and Ubersuggest come up on price.

Does LinkGecko replace Semrush for backlink research?

No. Semrush indexes links across the web and scores domains by authority. LinkGecko works from a much shorter list: the sites AI answers cite for your buyer questions.

Can I start from my Semrush keyword list?

You start from a domain or a single buyer question. The agent collects the search phrases buyers type and turns them into the questions they put to AI assistants.

How long before a new listing changes an AI answer?

Answers that search the web can shift within weeks of a mention on a cited source. What a model absorbed in training moves over months.

Does LinkGecko replace rank tracking in Google?

No. It tracks whether AI answers name your brand. Position tracking across a large keyword set stays with a rank tracker such as Semrush.

Does LinkGecko work with AI agents?

Yes, through MCP. Connect it to your AI assistant app and ask about cited sites, link targets and drafts in plain language.
